RDR2 might be awesome for all I know

I've talked in the past about being impressed with the increasing level of detail in a lot of video games. As I've thought more about it though, I've come to the conclusion that, as technically impressive as it may be that the horses in Red Dead Redemption 2 have testicles which realistically shrink in the cold (and I'm assuming this is limited to the male horses), getting them to do that seems like a massive waste of time. It would be putting it lightly to say that I don't understand what things like that are supposed to add to a game other than unnecessary realism for its own sake. I understand that a higher level of detail can benefit a game greatly if applied well, but this really just feels frivolous (what a thing to say about a video game, right?).

Granted I haven't actually played the game and I likely wouldn't have regardless, but I can't help thinking about how, in the 20 years since Ocarina of Time came out, I've never once noticed or cared that Epona doesn't poop, so I'm interested to see whether anyone cares about this next year or if they would have even noticed if it weren't so heavily publicized. If people are still playing RDR2 by then, I can't imagine it will have anything to do with how detailed the horses' genitals are, so it feels like such a silly thing for developers to spend their 100 hour crunch weeks working on.

Though now that I'm thinking about it, I wouldn't be surprised if someone from Rockstar is bragging to his friends that he got paid double overtime to model horse balls. And really, it might be that that guy just didn't have anything else to do while they were finishing off the game anyway.

Ultimately, I'm sort of falling for the advertising trap myself. I doubt I'd be thinking about this game at all if it weren't for this whole realism thing, so at the end of the day, I guess it's sort of doing its job, and that's really an extra kick in the teeth as far as I'm concerned.

Man, this is a lot more negative than I usually like to be.
