Grinding metal off of metal to produce more specific metal

We started our machining course last week, but that was mostly orientation things and learning to read measurement tools. Yesterday we actually got to grind a tool bit and I've learned a few things already; most importantly, eat before class and the closer you get to being done, the less it's going to feel like you're making progress. Also, more specifically, try not to overheat your workpiece. That one feels more obvious, but I didn't realize it would be so easy to screw up, especially when you're close to finishing, but feel like you've been just as close for the last hour and you're trying to hurry up because you're hungry and want to be done so you can go to taco bell.

I think if we had eaten beforehand, I probably would have been more proud of my work, but I was mostly just excited to leave. Thinking back on it, it's pretty neat even though it's pretty simple. All we really did was take a block of metal and sand a side down until it had an edge and we're not even actually done yet because we still have to do the sides, but, as Obi-Wan Kenobi said to Luke Skywalker, we've taken our first step into a larger world.

This morning, I weighed 177 lbs.

Yesterday, I ate:

~ Three mini waffles

~ Half a bottle of cafe mocha soylent

~ Three burritos from taco bell

At time of writing, Alu and I are a couple of hours into our last work day before Thanksgiving and I'm pretty stoked. Both of our families have been pretty supportive of our being vegetarian (my dad notwithstanding as I haven't told him because I'm concerned he'd react similarly to the time I told him I was getting baptised mormon) so I'm looking forward to the annual Alu-family lunch a lot more than I was last year when we were just starting out and hadn't told anyone yet and were worried people would notice we were avoiding the main course.

After that, we have work for a couple of hours, but that should be pretty easy. Everyone is pretty much in the same room with the people they'd be calling, so calls are usually slow. Then off to my mom's boyfriend(?)'s house for more food!

Good times!

Take it easy!
